Radiological Observation on the Bones of Forefoot

Abstract
Two hundred radiograms of normal adult foot, 100 men and 100 women, were studied to review the skeletal shape and arrangement of forefoot. The following observations and measurements were made using radiograms obtained.
1. Intermetatarsal angle and hallux abduction angle
2. Morphology of metatarsal head
3.Relative length projection of the metatarsals and the phalanges
The results were as follows.
1. Intermetatarsal angle ; angles ranged from 0-16 degrees, with the mode occurring at 7-9 degrees. The average intermetatarsal angle of man and woman were 7.1 and 8.9 degree respectively.
2. Hallux abduction angle; angles ranged from 4-28.5 degrees, with the mode occurring at 11-20 degrees. The average hallux abduction angle of man and woman were 14.3 and 16.9 degree respectively.
3. Probable correlation between the angles of intermetatarsal and hallux valgus was noted.
4. Among 200 normal feet, abnormally increased angle¢¥s were observed in 97 intermetatarsal angles and 51 hallux valgus angles.
5. Among three shapes of metatarsal head-round, square and square with a center ridge-round head was 811 and square 189. Most of square head was distributed in the second metatarsal(148 among total 189 square head).
f 6. Relative metatarsal protrusion followed the 3 main patterns; 2>1>3>4>5 (85 feet), 1>2>3>4>5(71 feet) and 2>3>1>4>5(39 feet)
7. Relative phalangeal protrusion followed the 2 main patterns; 1>2>3>4>5 (165 feet)) and 2>1>3>4>5(33 feet)
